DR. WEIL'S 4-7-8 BREATH RELAXATION EXERCISE
Dr. Weil's 4-7-8 breath is a natural tranquilizer for the nervous system; use this exercise whenever you feel internal tension.
Steps:
The absolute amount time of you spend on each cycle is not important; however, four breath cycles at a time is the maximum for the first month. You may work up to eight breath cycles, but practice no more than eight breath cycles at a time. The benefits are cumulative, and a consistent practice is the key—ideally, perform the exercise twice a day. Watch a video demonstration of Dr. Weil's 4-7-8 Breath.
Steps:
- Sit with your back straight and your feet flat on the floor
- Rest your tongue softly behind your front, top teeth
- Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whooshing sound
- Close your mouth and inhale quietly to a count of four
- Hold to a count of seven
- Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whooshing sound to a count of eight
- This is one breath; now inhale again and repeat the cycle for a total of four times
